WASHINGTON, D.C. (WSAU) — A Wisconsin Senator is calling on the US Department of Agriculture to take further action to contain the spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), commonly known as bird flu, in dairy cattle.
“Wisconsin’s dairy industry supports thousands of good paying jobs, drives our rural economies, and provides nutritious products around the world, and it is critical to our state that we get the response to this virus right,” said Senator Tammy Baldwin in a press release. “The federal government has to step up to help our dairy farmers and producers weather and combat this outbreak, stop the spread of this virus, and ensure consumers know what is being done to keep them safe.”
Baldwin’s comments came one day after the USDA implemented mandatory testing for the virus for any cattle being transported across state lines. They’ve also implemented mandatory reporting for all state laboratories
There are no known cases of bird flu in Wisconsin dairy cattle. Cases have been reported in Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, South Dakota, and Texas.
